Wade lives in the small town of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin and travels to various locations in the surrounding areas to support the Fresh healthy vending franchise he has built. “Once they try the products, it builds an understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish, and because the quality is so good, it helps to support a relationship with the product lines. The natural foods are very popular. I get asked all the time, ‘Are you the guy that brought in the machines with all this great food?’ Previously snacks were not allowed, the students and staff are grateful to have the natural vending choices available,” Bergner said.
Since many of the small-town and rural-area students are not familiar with the quality and variety of the products available in the machines, he holds product sampling events. “We work with our locations to hold the events for times that work for the schools, we sample out the foods and the drinks too,” said Bergner. The machines are on timers to accommodate the school’s breakfast and lunch programs and a percent of the money goes back to the schools. The Fresh Healthy vending machines are stocked with all-natural, organic and preservative-free snacks and beverages. These nutritious selections make healthy choices easier for the students.
Becky Davis is the Principal at Chippewa Falls High School. She has been with the school for 15 years, but her history with CFHS is longer than that; This is her hometown and the high school that she attended. Becky is pleased to report “The school has two Fresh healthy vending machines, one in the commons area adjacent to the main entrance where the kids get off the bus and the other near the big gym and locker room.”.
She was introduced to the concept when she received an email from Fresh Healthy Vending. “I thought to myself, ‘There are no good reasons NOT to try this. It sounded good.” she said. “The maintenance and refilling is all taken care of and a percentage of the money goes back to the school.”
“We’re not a big city, and do not have health food stores around. But the students were familiar with the products and excited to have them available,” she noted. She was taken back by how encouraging the students were in welcoming and embracing the food selections. Not only did they know about the products, but they were grateful to have them available. Within the first few weeks she received many positive responses and thank yous from students.
“They had a familiarity with the products, things like coconut water. It’s a great idea to provide the really healthy options,” Davis said, “and to be able to offer things that they should be eating and drinking. The products are always fresh, and the machines are always full. Wade is here every other day to fill the machines. Everything is taken care of by Fresh Healthy Vending and it’s totally trouble free for the school. The machines take check cards too, so that’s convenient.”
“It’s good to be able to have choices available for the kids after school in music, theater and athletics. A protein shake is a healthy snack that’s not sugar-laced or full of empty calories,” Davis noted. “It’s part of doing what is right for the kids that attend the school.”
St. Croix Central High School in Hammond Wisconsin has one machine located in the commons area near the main entrance. Nic Been is the Athletic Director, as a health concsience person himself is happy not to have energy drinks, pop or candy available for the students.
“Originally Wade contacted me about putting a machine on campus. I talked to people I knew at other schools in the area to see how the machines were working out,” Been said. “This machine gets consistent use all day long. The kids will have a healthy snack and then head into the weight room.
“Wade takes care of the machines himself. It’s great for the kids that are here for after-school activities because they can get something that will sustain them when other food options aren’t available.”
Bergner is happy with the way the products and machines have been welcomed in the area. “They like the snacks because they are healthier, and they taste good too,” he said. A Fresh Healthy Vending business is a cause that goes beyond financial benefit, it’s a socially-responsible vending program. The fight against obesity in this country is being won by bringing healthy food to communities and providing a beneficial impact while working for the greater good.

College Students and Fresh Healthy Vending Coffee at 3 a.m.
Hampshire College students in Amherst Massachusetts have the option of finding a fresh-brewed cup of coffee at 3 a.m., if required. The College has installed a new, Fresh Healthy Vending Café machine in the Johnson Library. It provides a fresh-brewed, satisfying cup of coffee made from fair-trade beans that are ground fresh for each individual cup. It is the only place on campus to access a fresh cup of coffee when studying late.
“This unique healthy vending machine dispenses organic coffee drinks together with signature healthy snack options,” states David Greeman, a franchisee of the Fresh Healthy Vending Company that supplies the Café machine. “These machines are not your parents’ old-school coffee machines or ones that provide a bitter gas-station brew. This is comparable to a cup from a gourmet, specialty coffee shop.” David is a former restaurant chef and culinary instructor at the Lincoln Culinary Institute in Hartford, Connecticut.
The healthy vending machine also supplies a variety of other hot and cold beverages, including hot chocolate, chai tea and lattes, with French vanilla a choice favorite. Each beverage costs less than two dollars, making the gourmet coffee affordable for the students at this liberal arts college.
Hampshire College is implementing a healthy food transition; they have a sustainability initiative director and have set objectives and milestones. The goal: to change the enterprise of producing, preparing, consuming, and managing food on campus, using food as a means to teach students, communicate values, experiment with new models of food systems that solve problems, influence our peers, and serve our community.
“Nutritious and wholesome snacks are available from the machine too,” David continues, “The culture at this school is forward-thinking with alternative ideas, social consciousness, and environ- mental awareness. The food choices and healthy offerings in the machine are a natural fit for the student body.”
The Healthy Vending Café machine is accessible during library hours and after the bookstore and other campus food and beverage options have closed. The library is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. at crunch times during the school year and most nights it remains open until midnight.
Marge Dunehew, Hampshire College’s Purchasing Manager said, “It’s an attractive vending machine, operates trouble-free and does what it’s supposed to do. From a back-office perspective, the Café machine is brilliant because I get no complaints that it’s not working or that people have lost money. All the feedback and comments have been positive,” she said, “One staff member reports a serious latte habit every afternoon at 3 p.m.”

Baltimore City Schools to implement new USDA nutritional requirements turning vending in to “healthy”
Baltimore – February 18, 2013 – The USDA is working on amending The Federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 with proposed new rules that will effect vending machine food options available to students in schools. The current 160-page document is accessible for public comment. It outlines the standards for sodium, sugar and calorie levels acceptable in the food products, as well as beverage and portion sizes, limits on caffeine, location of machines and frequency of sales to students.
The report states: These proposed changes are intended to improve the health and well- being of the Nation’s children, increase consumption of healthful foods during the school day and create an environment that reinforces the development of healthy eating habits. The new choices will meet standards for calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium, and have whole grains, low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, or protein foods as their main ingredients… such nutrition standards apply to all foods sold outside the school meal programs; on the school campus; and at any time during the school day.
Baltimore Fresh Healthy Vending Franchisee L.A. Brickner is loving the recent USDA attention. “When starting this business, I was greeted with confusion when I mentioned the words healthy vending.” Now it’s in the news daily, “Healthy vending is becoming a priority for many local governments, schools and businesses, it’s a simple way to encourage a healthier lifestyle and introduce students and employees to alternatives to junk food”, Says Brickner. She should know, she operates her vending machines in the Baltimore City Public Schools amongst other businesses in the area.
Providing a range of products that already meet and exceed the USDA standards is what Fresh Healthy Vending offers, so schools that make the leap to the new machines and the healthy choices are provided a program that is turn-key in every respect.
School of Rock in Baltimore is one school that has taken the initiative and installed these healthy vending machines. They operate an after-school program from 3pm to 9p.m. and students are often ready for something to satisfy their hunger once class is over for the day. The school General Manager, Melody Easton, is completely on board, “It’s fantastic to be able to offer students healthy snack options. Fresh Healthy Vending gives a great alternative to average vending machine fare,” she noted.
Officer Lawrence E. Smith Jr., head football coach and member of the Baltimore City School Police, has seen the kids adjust to the healthier fare in Fresh’s vending machines, “We have 900 kids here at the high school, they love the new choices, the 3 machines need to be refilled every 2 days or so. We thought it might be a rough transition to the healthier foods, but they’ve adjusted and love all the products.”

In addition to already meeting and in most locations exceeding the USDA guidelines, Fresh Healthy Vending also specializes in creating menus for their machines that adhere to specific Local, County, School District and Specialty Dietary Guidelines.
The USDA recently -launched the Smart Snacks in Schools regulations, part of the 2010 Healthy Hungry Free Kids Act. The new rules will regulate what is sold in vending machines and school cafeterias. Vending machines cannot offer candy, greasy chips, cakes, sports drinks or any beverage with caffeine.
Fresh Healthy Vending, the Nation’s largest Healthy Vending Machine operator and Franchisor is not new to offering products that meet the new Federal guidelines put in place by the USDA. “In addition to complying with the guidelines set forth by the USDA for implementing healthier nutritional requirements, Fresh Healthy Vending also abides by more robust guidelines from local government, public and private schools and can also create menus that accommodate locations that require Kosher, Nut-free, Gluten-Free and many other types of specialized requests as we have done for several of the 2,000 + locations we are in” says Megan Willshon, Product Development Manager at Fresh Healthy Vending. Willshon works in making sure that all healthy snacks and drinks are approved with guidelines set by bodies such as Senior Community Centers or Local Recreation Parks. Fresh Healthy Vending is the only healthy vending company that offers such a service in house and has been doing it for years having pioneered the healthy vending concept.
The new USDA Smart Snacks in Schools regulation mandates all snacks to be less than 200 calories per serving. They must have no more then 200 milligrams of sodium, only 35 percent of calories from sugar, and be caffeine free. Snack foods must have fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and nuts as part of the selection.
Fresh Healthy Vending sells a huge range of products that meet and exceed the USDA standards such as organic fruit juices that are low in sugar and sodium, natural sodas that are low in sugar and salt content with no caffeine, organic fruit snacks made from real fruit, low-fat yogurt and soy pudding, granola bars, super food nut bars and organic cookies and crackers that have less salt, sugar, and fat than regular cookies. Fresh Healthy Vending and its Franchisees across the nation are already very familiar with how these types of snack offerings put the school administration mind at ease.
Fresh Healthy Vending continues to place the majority of its machines each month in to middle and high schools across the country. Besides franchising its machines to what it calls “Social Entrepreneurs” the company also operates its own machines in San Diego with plans to grow the operation to over 250 locations before the end of 2013.
